This upcoming Thursday is Tisha B’va. On Tisha B’av we sit on the floor, read Eichah, and mourn the destruction of the first and second Beis HaMikdash – Temple. But for many of us, one question lingers: How can we truly mourn something that happened nearly 2,000 years ago? We never saw the Temple. We never experienced its glory. What exactly are we missing?
Perhaps there is an aspect that we can personally relate to. The Beis HaMikdash was more than a magnificent building. It was the place where Hashem’s Presence was openly felt. There was prophecy, Divine service, and a tangible awareness of Hashem’s closeness. When questions arose, there was a Sanhedrin – Jewish supreme court, to guide the nation. There was far less confusion about how to live, what was true, and what Hashem wanted from His people. It was a world of clarity.
Today, we live in a very different world. We are surrounded by uncertainty. We face difficult decisions, conflicting opinions, and endless questions. Often, we simply want the reassurance of knowing that we are on the right path. Anyone who has struggled with an important decision knows the relief that comes when the answer finally becomes clear. There is a special joy when uncertainty gives way to understanding. And, we are deeply grateful to the wise individuals whose guidance has helped us see things more clearly. The great Torah commentator Metzudas Dovid (1687–1769) beautifully expresses this idea when he writes, “There is no greater joy than the resolution of doubt.”
Perhaps this is one way to connect to the mourning of Tisha B’Av. We are not only mourning the loss of a building; we are mourning the loss of that clarity. We grieve a world in which Hashem’s Presence was so evident that doubt gave way to certainty, confusion to direction, and distance to closeness.
As we fast and reflect, we can ask ourselves what life would feel like if that clarity returned. Imagine living with a constant awareness of Hashem’s Presence, knowing with confidence how to serve Him and feeling the peace that such certainty brings.
